richard barbieri - things buried (cd)
"Things Buried" is the debut solo album from Richard Barbieri.
Surprisingly this is his first solo work despite a musical career that has spanned four decades.
He joined the group Japan in 1976 and although initially perceived as a hyped act, the band went on to enjoy commercial success and critical acclaim. They were one of the most successful bands of the early eighties and the album "Tin Drum" is still considered today a classic innovative work.
He has been a member of the rock band Porcupine Tree for ten years and recently the group have enjoyed chart success across Europe with their album "In Absentia" .
To mention all the albums, collaborations, tours, and guest appearances over the years requires a detailed discography. Suffice to say that Richard's musical output has been substantial and varied and he has worked on many projects alongside some of the most innovative artists of our time.
"Things Buried" is an instrumental work that highlights Barbieri's unique approach to sound and mood, ranging from textural atmospherics to dynamic rhythmic passages.
The album also features the distinctive styles of Percy Jones ( Brian Eno, Brand X ) on fretless bass guitar and Andy Gangadeen ( The Bays, Massive Attack ) on Drums.

Amazing album indeed. It does take you to some of the places that JBK or J/B albums evoked, but it's still different as well. Get it, you won't regret it!

So,ich schreib einfach mal auf Deutsch! Hab Ihn im Vorprogramm von Blackfield auf einem Konzert im Substage in Karlsruhe erlebt. Nachdem mir von seiner "Technic Front" der Arsch versohlt wurde, wußte ich, diese Platte,die ich mir jetzt gleich kaufen werde, musste du haben. Und jetzt drück ich mal schön auf "buy". Tobias/Ashore

Each song pervades space submerging the mind to a complex aural voyage wondrously and strikingly tangible, invigorating, profound and mesmerizing.

It takes a while to get used to, as it is not like his stuff with Jansen (for example) nor like his stuff with PT. I would say it's closest to his work with the H-band (of which Gangadeen is also a member). Well worth having, if you like instrumental music that's not poppy, but not too experimental either. And I do. Recommended!

I really like this disc. I expected it to be a lot more abstract and ethereal than it is. Vaguely similar to Boards of Canada. The contributions by Gangadeen and Jones are cool - tasteful yet deceptively intricate.
