Albatross was formed by Earnhardt and Anderson in 2006, under the moniker Overtone. The two had played together in the band Postscript, which recorded a wealth of demos and played a one-off show. When activity in this band began to fizzle, Matthew began demoing material on his own. When Alex heard the first track, he gave it the green light and the two agreed to begin collaborating together. A four-song EP titled Empires was planned for release in mid 2007, but ended up never seeing the light of day, as the duo began demoing new songs that they felt were superior.
After Matthew took time off to create his debut solo album, Merciless Ocean (AUDVEE17), Alex and Matthew rejoined forces in the summer of 2009 to begin the recording process of their debut release, The Rebel and the Lover (AUDVEE32). During the production process, the name Albatross was selected as a new band name. The future sees the two musicians collaborating further on a potential EP release sometime in the year 2010.
Described as a fusion of alt-rock energy, post-rock reflection and modern metal aggression, the band has created ambitious musical journeys intended to envelope the listener. Although rhythmic drive in the rock and metal tradition serves as a sturdy foundation for the band's sound, a striking blend of experimentation and melody is the key to the atmosphere and direction of the music as a whole.
