hatfield and the north - hatwise choice (cd)

Formed in 1972 and named after a motorway road sign, Hatfield and the North were one of the best-loved of the so-called 'Canterbury' bands. The group became a legend with music fans in Europe, America and Japan, but broke up in 1975 just as its reputation began to build.

Hatfield's music ranged from the dreamy lyrical songs of ex-Caravan musician Richard Sinclair to Dave Stewart's complex instrumentals, via the jazzier, more free-ranging and experimental tunes of Phil Miller and Pip Pyle. During their brief life span, the group recorded two highly acclaimed albums (Hatfield & The North and The Rotters' Club), played numerous live gigs and recorded several radio shows in the UK and Europe.

Hatwise Choice is the band's own selection of unreleased material culled from their tape archive. It consists of over 68 minutes of live concert tapes and radio recordings, the latter mastered from first generation sources. The gig tapes show aspects of Hatfield's music never before heard on record - on stage, the tight control of the group's studio work is replaced by a looser, improvisatory approach. Flashes of humour give way to frightening electronic landscapes, interspersed with extended arrangements of the band's compositions and occasional moments of utter musical madness.

The CD comes in a full-colour Digipak with a 20-page booklet, featuring an extensive history written by the four players and additional text by best-selling author Jonathan Coe. This is a carefully researched, lovingly compiled package which should interest not only committed Canterbury collectors, but all supporters of creative, experimental and improvisatory pop/rock music.

Can we have a ultra plush edition on double vinyl, preferably made in Japan with a nice Obi. I like the shiny texture of the CD, reminds me of all the money Virgin spent on cardboard and clarifoil in 1973.

Frunabulax Groake

Amazing and essential addition to the short but sweet Hatfield catalogue! Now we are eagerly awaiting volume 2!

Christian Isendahl

It's so great to have more of this - there wasn't enough at the time! What the world needs now is a Hatfield and the North 'roadsign' t-shirt!

Trevor Lines

Arrived this morning thus scuppering all plans for a productive day: yesterday it was the Robert Wyatt Drury Lane Concert, which finds its ideal bedfellow here - and more besides. Miracles can happen - even in this day and age.

Sean

Saw Hatfield and the North at the Robin 2 in Bilston last month, and have posted a few pics of the gig at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pebar/sets/952419/ Just thought you might be interested in seeing them. Brilliant gig. Pete Barker

A limited number of copies of 'Hatwise Choice' were signed by the four musicians. Priced at £20, these sold out quite quickly, so we're hoping the band will sign some more in future!

Burning Shed

Hello, I read a review that said an autographed version of this title could be had for a premium. Is this version still available, and if so, how much?

Jeff Horiguchi

I ordered this minues after I discovered it on this site thanks to the Schizoid Band official web page link. I can not believe I'm going to own a third Hatfield and the North official release!

MICHAEL HIRSH

What a gorgeous CD - 68 minutes of musical bliss. Thank you Hatfields - and please let's have vol. 2 real soon.

Andrew Robertson

Great CD - especially the live stuff. The cover says that this is vol 1. Will vol 2 be out soon?

nick bradey

Joyous - worth paying double for the 1st 2 tracks alone.

phil dent

YES!!!

skilly

Great CD, first class service - thanks!

Simon

I'm not sure if 'Afters' really was *withdrawn* - it was freely available in Virgin, Bristol for about 4 years! You have to find a copy if only for the sleevenotes and the lyric insert.

Mark Clinton Jones

So did Dave Stewart pass the audition then? He appears to be on the CD.

Al Coda

Are we allowed to be having this much fun at our age? looking forward to the next volume (...and the next, and the next, and the next.....)

hugh manatee

'Afters' really doesn't have anything unique on it -- it's mostly tracks from the 2 LPs with a couple of live tracks added, and those bonus tracks show up on 'The Rotters' Club' CD. So the need for 'Afters' is pretty much negated, IMO.

This is the best-packaged CD that I have ever come across. The music has so much of the feelgood factor and so much joy in it. The ultimate supergroup - in all senses. Phil, Pip, and Richard were to be seen and heard playing in the wilds of Whitstable at the end of January and they have not lost their touch.

Peter Johansen

IMHO, this is the most important Canterbury release of the past twenty-five years. There is not one disappointing second on this CD. It is simply essential.

Steven W. Brown

Update: According to Ian Chippett (below) 'Nan True's Hole' was the name of John Peel's house in Suffolk, having been previously owned by one Nan True (or something like that). So there you go.

Robert Carlberg/Anode Productions

Most important album to be released in decades! I have several thousand albums - but this one easily fits in the top five (together with the two Hatfield studio albums). Can't wait for volume 2!!

Michael (Sweden)

What a great album from this GREAT band, the best buy for many, many years. A must for all music lovers (not only Canterbury freaks). Can't wait for #2. Hans Voigt RadiOrakel Oslo/Norway

Hans Voigt

Finally... such great music... we hope for more to come.

René du Vinage

It's been a great day - fixed the PSU in the computer, got a massove bag of Revels and this arrived... signed. Bliss!!

Jeff C

Well it's pretty terrific... just ONE essential thing missing. In my hugely humble opinion, the bestest ever Hats piece ever recorded was from their second (I think) Peel Session and THAT track is 'Your majesty is like a cream donut'. On CD 2 please.... By the way, Nan True's Hole's main lyrics are: (Words by Robert Wyatt) "There's a place where I can hide away, Just for a little holiday, In the house of a friend we know and love called Nan True's Hole." (Thanks to Calyx web site!)

Chris Marshall

This is amazing! I too cannot wait for Vol 2. I am so grateful for this album, the 30 year wait was well worth it! Now how's about some Hatfield stickers, the roundabout logo would be lovely !

Philly (Germany)

Oh the fun...

Michael Peters

Just received my copy today, and it's stunning. Packaging and sound are top notch. Unlike the National Health archivals, almost all of the songs here are familiar - but any Hatfield is good Hatfield because a recorded legacy of only two albums (and one single) is not enough! Thanks to all the lads for putting this together! Can't wait for Vol. II! Question: Anybody know what the original words of 'Nan True's Hole' were?

Robert Carlberg/Anode Productions

Superb. Simply that. Lifelong fan. Bring on Vol.2. Will pay the extra again for the chaps' scribble on the cover, but tragically I've no idea why.

Pete Turnpenney (Leicester)

Just got it today. It's quite good isn't it? I hope there's more to come.

chris fairhurst

Tour.....Tour....Tour.....Tour.....

Pablo Gonzalez

Everything that was great and fun in English music of the Seventies on one reasonably-priced piece of plastic. Buy it! (All profits will go towards making the musicians slightly richer and happier.)

Ian Chippett

Despite reports to the contrary, Dave Stewart will not be playing any live gigs with the band.

Burning Shed

I need it. Reminds me a live performance on French radio in about 1975?. Fabulously innovative, you must find it again. At the same time,I was supposed to tell lessons to my mother, haha I was out of my mind!!! Do you play a Wal bass?

Sylvain

This music has been important for almost 30 years! If only I could travel to Jolly Old E for the reunion show in March!

Billy Davis

Fabulous - I have waited for decades for some more of his superb material and here it finally is! Keep it coming...

Guy Manning

Wow. We all said it would never happen. Guess even geezers can be proved wrong.

Robert Carlberg/Anode Productions

I can't tell you how happy I am that these recordings are finally being made available.

Jeff Melton

Uf-f-f... FINALLY!!!

Shlomo Polonsky

I never thought I'd live to see a thing as lovely as a 'new' Hatfields CD.
