Mick Karn - The Concrete Twin (cd)
Boldly defying easy categorisation, The Concrete Twin is a dense and dramatic instrumental outing from the former Japan legend, Mick Karn.
Laced with symphonic ambition and unexpected Jazz, Swing and Drum & Bass textures and rhythms, TCT marks yet another series of creative stylistic departures for the ever-inventive Karn.
"I wanted to move away from using samples," explains Mick, "so developed a way to sample myself. I began by recording layer upon layer of any instrument I could find to produce almost orchestral passages, which I then took parts of and placed into the tracks when needed. It opened up a whole new way of writing, one that I'll use again."
Pete Lockett (drums and percussion), appears on several tracks, while Mick's typically unorthodox instrumentation includes the dida and ocarina, unheard since the recordings of Tin Drum and Titles.
